Sandra

Sandra

Lion Surfer

Sandra was born on April 13, 1990 on Good Friday, God’s Day. She is 31 years old and is a fraternal twin with her sister Raquel. She only weighed 5 pounds and 13 ounces at birth. Our family did not find out they were having twins until 8 months into the pregnancy. During the pregnancy, her mother discovered she had diabetes and was treated with insulin. Sandra was eventually diagnosed with autism and meets qualifications in all 6 categories, where her twin Raquel only meets 3 qualifications. Sandra has always needed extra help and relies heavily on Raquel.  Sandra is non-verbal and communicates through pointing and gestures. Sandra struggles with sensory overload, but loves art, music and anything Disney. She has always enjoyed coloring, drawing and art.

David

David

The Parrot & You Are Loved

David (23) brings joy everywhere he goes! He was born with Down syndrome and his early years were filled with a life-threatening illness that had him visiting all the “…ologists” for years along with more than a few hospital visits. Thankfully, he is now mostly healthy and always up for fun. He swims competitively and is back in the pool after isolating for most of 2020. His favorite meet was in Puerto Rico with the Special Olympics. He loves being with family and friends, music/dancing, reading, basketball and watching movies. His sister  encouraged him on his various Art projects. David is the ultimate encourager, ALWAYS brightens our days, and reminds us of what is truly important. He enjoys the Adult Program at his school where he has opportunities to be involved in continuing education, job training and many social activities.
Nikki

Nikki

Pizza Man

Nikki is a wonderful young lady who lights up any room she enters.  Her positive attitude and bright demeanor makes you fall in love with her instantly.  Her disability is overshadowed by all her amazing abilities.  And while she has had several challenges in her life, Nikki continues to make the best of every day.

Nikki has endured challenges from early on.  She is diagnosed with Down’s Syndrome and has learned to adapt in many ways; socially, academically, and emotionally.  She also lost a parent early on and her life changed instantly; moving to another state, living with new relatives, changing schools, making new friends, basically leaving all she knew behind.  And, yet, incredibly Nikki triumphed!

The world usually sees a disability before the person.  Nikki sees the world without prejudice or preconceived notions.  A lesson we should all practice
