Love Is Blind: A Limited Design Supporting Batten Disease Research

Paper Clouds Apparel is proud to launch the Love Is Blind collection, a limited design created to raise awareness for blindness, accessibility, and Juvenile Batten disease.

This design features the word love brailled, with the “O” replaced by a heart. The braille was created by Daxx, a child living with Juvenile Batten disease.

Fifty percent of profits from this collection are donated to the Batten Disease Support, Research, and Advocacy Foundation to help fund research and support families navigating this diagnosis.

This launch is rooted in real life, real love, and real action.

What Is Juvenile Batten Disease

Batten disease, also known as Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis, is a family of rare inherited neurodegenerative disorders that primarily affect the central nervous system.

It is caused by genetic mutations that prevent cells from properly disposing of waste. Over time, waste builds up in cells and damages the brain and nervous system.

Symptoms can include:

  • Vision loss or blindness
  • Seizures
  • Cognitive decline
  • Loss of motor skills
  • Behavioral changes

There are 13 known forms of Batten disease. Currently, there is no cure.

It is estimated that 2 to 4 births per 100,000 in the United States are affected by Batten disease.

The Story Behind the Design

In 2020, what began as a routine eye appointment led to a diagnosis of Juvenile Batten disease for Daxx.

As his vision changed, his mom Kristin learned braille alongside him to stay connected to his world. The Love Is Blind design was originally created to raise awareness for White Cane Day and continues to serve that purpose today.

The word love, brailled by Daxx, is more than artwork. It reflects accessibility, adaptation, and connection.

How the Love Is Blind Collection Supports Research

Fifty percent of profits from the Love Is Blind collection are donated to the Batten Disease Support, Research, and Advocacy Foundation.

The BDSRA Foundation is the largest support and research organization in North America dedicated to families affected by Batten disease. Its mission is to support Batten families, fund and facilitate research, and advocate for treatments and a cure.

Donations help fund:

  • Research grants
  • Family support programs
  • Advocacy initiatives
  • Clinical Centers of Excellence
  • Global research collaboration

Every purchase helps move research forward.

Why Awareness Matters

Rare diseases often receive limited research funding and public attention. Increasing awareness helps drive:

  • Earlier diagnosis
  • Greater research investment
  • Improved standards of care
  • Community support for affected families

The Love Is Blind design serves as a conversation starter about accessibility, blindness, and the urgent need for a cure.
